Detoxification and our Bodies

Unfortunately, we are living in a toxic world today.

We are exposed to toxins in our air, food and water.

We are exposed to toxins so frequently that the average person has over 300 toxins in the body at any given time, and even newborns have over 200 chemicals in their bodies at birth.

Where do these toxins come from?

The most common exposures that we get are through toxic farming chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.

However, we are also exposed through products such as household cleaners, new carpets and other industrial materials, and product chemicals.

Here are some there concerning examples:

-Personal care products we use on our face, skin and hair.

-Synthetics used in dental repair. Did you know that the metal amalgams used on many of our teeth are so toxic that they are considered biohazardous waste? These amalgams release toxic gas chemicals every time we chew or drink a hot liquid. In addition, when they are removed, it is crucial to have that done by a dentist who is trained in safe removal so that your exposure to their harm can be minimized.

-Auto-exhaust and smoke which pollute the air that we breathe.

The list goes on and on.

Some of the things that people begin to experience when they can no longer keep up with their toxic burden are sensitivity to perfumes and exhaust, for example.

Metabolic detoxification refers to the body’s process of turning toxins, toxicants and hormones into less harmful substances.

The primary ways the body eliminates toxins are through pathways that allow these substances to pass through urine or stool in the final phases while avoiding constipation at all costs!

Everyone’s body has a particular threshold at which the toxic load becomes too much for the body to handle. This is determined by things like:

  • the overall amount of toxicant exposure

  • genetic ability to produce the needed enzymes to break down the toxins

  • dietary ingestion of foods that drive the metabolic pathways responsible for detoxification.

Another consideration is how toxins relate to weight issues. One cause of obesity and resistant weight loss is a toxic burden. As the body becomes overwhelmed with toxins, it begins to create more fat cells in an effort to dilute them and relieve the body of the load. People who experience resistant weight loss because of this will not be able to lose weight until they detoxify.

This may all seem very disheartening, but there is good, scientifically proven news! There are ways to minimize the toxins we are exposed to.

Nature is so incredible in its offering to us. The nutrients in the cruciferous vegetable family (think broccoli and cauliflower) drive many of the body's metabolic processes that help us detoxify.

Fortunately, testing for many toxins in urine, hair and stool is possible.

We can also use advanced labs to assess the different detoxification pathways in the body as well as the status of different nutrients that provide powerful antioxidant support.

From there, personalized supplement regimens and other modalities can be employed.

It is possible, and important, to reduce our toxic burden by using things like high-powered air purifiers and water filtration systems.

It is incredible to notice how much better we can feel when we devote effort to ensuring that our bodies are not overburdened with toxins.
